Still, panelists said they expect some 15% of currently distressed renters will ultimately be evicted, representing millions of households. Panelists were more evenly split regarding the permanence of other pandemic-driven shifts in attitudes towards where we live and the ideal size of our homes.

Effective immediately, the Seattle-based listings giant is allowing 90 percent of its 5,400 employees to work from home indefinitely, at least part-time, the company disclosed in a blog post Wednesday. The move will be significant for the U.S. office market, as Zillow leases over 1 million square feet of space in New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, Irvine, Calif., Denver, Phoenix and Overland Park, Kan. According to the company’s annual report, its operating lease expenses were $29.1 million in 2019. In New York, Zillow subsidiary StreetEasy increased its office footprint in 2018, leasing 130,000 square feet at 1250 Broadway in NoMad. Although the panelists expect home value growth to be nearly double its historically “normal” annual pace of 3.6%, they expect a slowdown through the middle of the decade. On average, the panelists say they expect home growth to slow to 4.5% in 2022, 3.7% in 2023, 3.5% in 2024 and 3.6% in 2025. Remote work is here to stay, at least in a part-time form, according to the vast majority of 100+ economists and real estate experts recently surveyed by Zillow. A new hire’s manager places special emphasis on preparing for their arrival, and first-day tasks are scheduled out through the day to help both employee and manager know they’re on-track. This attention to organization and communication gives employees reassurance that nothing important is being missed. It also allows time for socializing with new team members — a critical concern of some incoming employees.

Our offices will be there for individuals and teams to enable productivity and collaboration — but they won’t be the only place where those things happen.
